A Georgia woman was detained Thursday after her husband and four young children were found dead inside their suburban Atlanta home, police said.
A fifth child was found alive but badly wounded and rushed to a local hospital, police said.
All of the victims appeared to be stabbed in what cops described as a “horrendous crime.”
A neighbor told WSB-TV that the woman was in the Loganville home for as long as 24 hours before cops were called.
She was immediately taken into custody Thursday.
The family lived in a one-story home in Loganville — a Gwinnett County city of 10,000 people about 35 miles east of Atlanta.
All of the children were under age 10, officials said, and the father was in his mid-30s.
Their bodies were still inside the house as of 9 a.m. Thursday, police said.
The neighbor told WSB-TV that the family moved to Georgia from Illinois about a month ago. Two SUVs with Illinois plates were seen in the home’s driveway on Thursday.
The mother is currently being interviewed by police.
Officials don’t have a motive yet, but indicated that the woman was the prime suspect.
“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand,” police said in a press release. “This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighborhood and community.”
